Thank you to Bebe Desjardins for partnering with me for this post. All opinions are 100% honest and my own.
You may or may not have caught on by now, but I love wooden toys. I am constantly adding to Bee’s collection of wooden toys because I know that they will grow with her and that they can be handed down to her future siblings, or even her own children someday. But besides being durable, natural, wooden toys have so many benefits. So, why choose natural and wooden toys?
They Inspire Imaginative Play
While plastic toys that have batteries, make sounds, and light up may be exciting for a minute, the excitement will likely wear off and the toy will wind up in a pile with the rest of them, unused and never played with. Toys that are simple in design allow for open-ended play. This is the type of play that encourages a child to be creative and keeps them interested for longer periods, as well as multiple stages of life. Our favourites are blocks, stacking toys, and sorting toys.
Open-ended play basically means that a child is required to use their imagination to create possibilities for their toys, and these possibilities are endless. Only limited by their imagination. And if you’re a parent you likely already know that a child’s imagination knows no bounds.
When a toy thinks for a child (ie: has a specific and obvious purpose or idea, and keeps the child from creating their own scenarios) it can limit their play, and therefore cause them to become bored of the toy. This could be the reason why the toys you buy your child so often remain unplayed with.
They Encourage a Healthy, Calm Mind
Toys with battery-generated effects and sounds can over-stimulate little ones. Blinking lights, loud sounds or music, and automated movement can often be far too much for such a small child to process. Pressing a button to make lights flash or sounds go off teaches a child cause and effect, but ignores an opportunity to encourage imaginative and engaged play on the child’s part.
In a room with natural toys, you will find it is quieter, more peaceful, and inviting, and you will likely find your child is calmer because of this. We are very much products of our environments, so offering the best environment for your child will encourage their mind to be healthy and calm.
Human beings are drawn to products created from natural materials. Have you noticed this with yourself or your friends? Holding or touching something made of wood has a positive effect on people. You may find yourself spending more time touching and looking at these items as opposed to plastic items you will likely pick up to shake or press a button, and then put back down.
They’re Better For Your Health, And The Planet
This one is pretty obvious, but due to a child’s desire to explore things with their mouths or cuddle them, plastic and non-natural (or even organic) products can pose health threats to little ones that are potentially very serious.
As I mentioned before, wooden toys are durable so they last much longer than plastic ones and create less waste. If the time does come to retire your toys, natural materials are recyclable, so their disposal will be kind to our Earth. I say “if” because of the durability of the toys, and the fact that children are drawn to natural toys and have more respect for them, so they tend to care for them better than their other toys. I’ve noticed this in B. She throws or tosses her plastic toys, and is a LOT more gentle with her wooden toys. It’s like she just knows, and can feel the quality..
It’s mostly (but definitely not limited to) the above reasons why I love Bebe Desjardins. These things are important to them, too. That is why their toys are made from Canadian white pine, with completely non-toxic, plant based, water colour paints. All wood glue they use is non-toxic and food grade. Everything is finished with mineral oil to seal. This means that everything they sell is all natural (with the exception of a few of the knit clothing items they offer being acrylic).
Bebe Desjardins sent blocks and a marine life stacker for our sweet girl. She LOVES them. She plays with them every. single. day. Her favourite thing right now seems to be to stack her blocks as tall as she can and then knock them down, laughing maniacally. She has also created “roads”, “houses”, and “mountains” so far in her play. Her marine animals swim through the “ocean”, and she stacks them as high as she can and tries to balance them in different orders.
Because we love our marine stacker so much, I am partnering with Bebe Desjardins to give one lucky reader a marine stacker set of their own! Enter using the form below. This giveaway will end May 31st at 11:59pm EST, and a winner will be announced here on the blog within 24 hours.

Parents of two littles, creators of Bebe Desjardins, makers of open-ended childhood fun. The inspiration for toy making came from our daughters Lydia and Amelia, and our love for all things safe and natural. We noticed the products that were easily accessible to us were not necessarily the most safe or environmentally friendly, and the ones that were are sold in high end boutiques, at much higher prices. We set out to create affordable, natural and conscious toys for our family, and other families, to enjoy.
We believe in open ended, imaginative, creative play for kids. No buttons, no electronics, just good old fashioned fun. We believe in playing cars or building towers or running outside. We are about reducing waste, and our carbon footprint.
Do you love wooden toys as much as we do? What are your favourite wooden or natural toys?
