This weekend Mike and I got to spend some much needed alone time together in Niagara Falls, ON. If you’ve never been, you should try and visit at some time in your life. The falls are stunning, and Niagara has a lot to offer people of all ages with varying interests. It’s got everything the ideal vacation spot does – good food, fun, and beautiful sights. Mike’s 30th birthday was at the end of March so I wanted to take him to have some fun and relax to celebrate. We made plans to go Friday night and come home on Saturday. However, we ending up deciding not to go home…
Friday evening we packed up the car and got on the road. I don’t do so well in the car. Meaning I get bored and I get car sick. But this drive wasn’t so bad. We chatted, held hands, and sang along to Sum 41. When we arrived we checked into our hotel and went and checked out the room. We stayed at The Holiday In By The Falls. It was the cheapest room we could find that wasn’t gross, I won’t lie. We didn’t really care, we wanted to spend our money on the food and fun, not the room. If it had a pool and a bed, we were good. The room was decent, and had it been just a month or so later, we would’ve loved it, as it had a little balcony that opened up to the outdoor pool. No complaints about this place, it was a great deal (we used Priceline to book).
After checking out our room and hanging out playing with some funny Snapchat filters, we got all dolled up for our dinner reservations at The Keg. Guys, The Keg (a Canadian steakhouse chain of restaurants) is delicious. And much like Niagara Falls, we always go there for special occasions, so it’s kind of “our place”. This time the food was just meh, and it was a bummer. On New Year’s Eve we had an amazing meal in Guelph, and most times at The Keg in Niagara we are quite happy. But this time our steaks were overcooked and dry, and Mike’s appetizer actually had to be sent back. Thank goodness though, as most steaks are, they were still good, just not what we are used to receiving from The Keg in Niagara Falls.
After that we headed back to our room to change and go swimming. The pool was really warm, the hot tub was hot, the sauna was nice and dry. We enjoyed ourselves. Then we went back to the room and laid down and watched TV until we went to bed. Super exciting, right? Hey, we’re parents, that’s about the most we can muster up on a week day night.
The next morning we got up and went for breakfast at Applebee’s before hitting up the Fallsview casino. The breakfast was okay, but super overpriced. Such a disappointment when their advertising (the entire reason we went in) stated that they had breakfast from $5.95 (double that). I checked out the dessert menu though, and made mental note that I HAD to come back and try the Apple Chimicheesecake. After that we headed to the casino, and spent a good few hours laughing about the hilarious slots and losing a bunch of money. Here’s the thing – when I go to the movies, unless it’s a cheap Tuesday, it costs me like $30-$40. If we both go, double that. Unless of course we sneak our own snacks in. Either way, for hours of entertainment, I’d say it was worth it. I love to play the penny slots. Our favourite was Return to Adventure Isle, a Peter Pan style game.
After our fun at the casino we grabbed lunch at My Cousin Vinny’s. It was a bit pricy (about $20-$30 for an entree), so we decided to split our lunch, which turned out to be a great idea because it ended up being huge and the perfect amount of food for two people. We noted that we should split our food more often – seriously, why isn’t everyone doing this!? We got tortellini with chicken in rose sauce and it came CRAZY quickly and was TO DIE FOR. The best meal we had the entire trip so far. We were impressed, and we will go back next time we are in the falls for sure.
At this point you’re probably noting my lack of photos.. Honestly, I had my phone away for the majority of our trip aside from snapping some things (which is where the photos in this post came from). It was important to me to focus on my partner and really connect. I wanted to enjoy my time without sitting behind a phone screen. Mike did the same. We checked our phones in the hotel room, but for the most part, our phones were away and we just enjoyed each other’s company. It was wonderful.
While we were sitting there, enjoying our lunch and our time together, we both commented on how much fun we were having, and how we wanted to stay. So we said “well, let’s just stay then..”. So we checked with my mom to make sure she wouldn’t mind watching B another night (which she didn’t), and then we excitedly started looking for a place to stay.
On Saturdays you pay more for a hotel in Niagara Falls. Probably double the regular price. Ideally you wanna visit Sunday through Thursday. But it was already a Saturday, and we wanted to stay again, so we just started calling the hotels around us to find a good deal at a great place. The Hilton Fallsview ended up having the cheapest room on the Saturday, with a king size bed and a city view. We happily booked it and made our way to check in.
Man.. This room was gorgeous. The view was incredible, and we could see the American falls from our room, despite it not being a falls view room. The Hilton Fallsview has a 3 storey waterslide, which was a deciding factor in addition to the price for us. However, it was closed, so we were bummed about that. It’s a popular hotel, so the pool was REALLY busy, but it was still nice. After we swam we hung out for a while, watching TV and enjoying the gorgeous view, and then we went out for a late bite to eat at Applebee’s (remember I made note to get that dessert). We split (seriously, it’s genius) a buffalo chicken roll up wrap and then the Apple Chimicheesecake. However, I would’ve ordered my own Chimicheesecake had I known in advance how DELICIOUS it would be. I mean, I should’ve known, since it’s a love child of apple pie and cheesecake, deep fried, and served with ice cream. But yeah, it was insane how good it was. Applebee’s had an amazing 90’s playlist going, and I decided that our second dining experience made up for the overpriced and totally not worth it breakfast we had that morning. We walked back to our hotel and spent the rest of the night talking and being together, enjoying the lights of Niagara Falls and just relaxing.
In the morning we went for breakfast at the Fallsview Casino Grand Buffet after checking out of the hotel. It was unreal. I can’t wait to go back and try the dinner buffet because if it was anything like the breakfast one, I will be stuffed like a turkey and happy as a clam. On our way out we played our favourite slot again, just $10 this time. We didn’t win anything, but it was one last bit of fun before we left.
Overall our weekend was incredible. Sure we had some just okay food but we also had some amazing food, and the time we spent together more than made up for any disappointments we felt (like when the water slide was closed, wahhh). We got to walk around holding hands, giggling like teenagers, being silly, and just having fun. Just us. Sure, we missed B, and we can’t wait to go back and take her with us, but there’s really nothing like a romantic weekend away. This afternoon I messaged Mike while he was at work and I said “ugh, I wish we were still in Niagara Falls” and I really do. He agreed. It was like cloud 9. I can’t wait to go back, or go somewhere else with Mike and get the chance to connect like we did when we went away.
Thank you Niagara Falls for being close enough that we can escape now and then, but also being far enough away that it felt like the romantic and relaxing vacation we really needed.
Do you and your partner have a special place that you visit every so often? Have you ever been to Niagara Falls?
