Haven Living is a Canadian shop owned and operated by the lovely Desja Walker. She carries a variety of new products, vintage/salvaged products, and handmade products. She even has her own skin care lines. Within her shop you can find things like burp cloths, teethers, and body care products for baby, phone cases, home fragrances, candles, crochet goods, and stationary! But her star of the show is her aroma-therapeutic body care products, both made by her and made by others.
If you’ve been following my blog for a while you might already know that I do my best to use safe and natural products within my home and on our skin. I frequently use the mobile app Think Dirty when I am out shopping to make sure I select the best options available in our local stores, order Honest Company diapers and wipes for B’s bum, and look for small shops and handmade products that have all natural ingredients. Recently I watched The Human Experiment on Netflix and it lit a fire under my bum – I need to replace these toxic products FASTER! Our skin is our biggest organ, we need to take care as to what we put on and into it.
That is why I LOVE Haven Living. Desja took her knowledge of skin care from her background as an esthetician, her passion, and her creativity, and she made her own skin care products. Pure, natural, non-toxic skin care products. She then expanded with her line called SPROUT, which is for babies, other handmade skin care products, and other goods.
I was gifted two beautiful jars from Desja’s line for women – a body polishing scrub and a whipped body moisturizer. She also sent me a bar of soap and some salve healing balm for B from her Sprout line. I was so excited about the new products for B that I ripped them open before taking a decent photo, but here they are, straight from the good ole iphone:
The soap is perfect – it is so creamy, and smells lovely. It isn’t an overwhelming smell like most perfumed soaps are. And the best part is obviously that it is made from natural ingredients and pure essential oil. Natural soaps don’t lather like the toxin-filled kinds do, so be prepared for that. However if you use a small loofah or wash cloth, you shouldn’t have a problem at all.
The salve is a lifesaver. B thankfully doesn’t get diaper rashes since we use Honest Company diapers and wipes, but she DOES get cuts and scrapes a lot. She actually picks at her neck until she bleeds if I forget to cut the tag out of her shirts – It’s awful! So I apply the healing balm to her ouchies and they heal up within a couple of days.
Personally, my feet need the most attention from moisturizers. I need the heavy-duty stuff because I get dry and cracked skin from being on my feet all day. Not to mention the fact that I can’t get a pedicure due to my incredibly ticklish feet.. seriously, I have nearly kicked the poor woman before! Unintentionally, of course! So I have to do my own pedicures. And maintain the moisture balance on my feet. This Haven Living whipped body moisturizer is incredible for that. It is thick and smells incredible, and it isn’t greasy. I use it most often on my elbows and knees in addition to my feet. You don’t need much at all to quench your skin – it melts with your body heat (between your hands), and stretches pretty far.
The body polishing scrub is also amazing, but I may be biased because I love scrubs (not the guys hangin’ on the passenger side of their best friend’s rides, though). I use this on my face once per week to exfoliate, and on my body every couple of weeks. However, it is so gentle you could use it more often. There are no toxins so you don’t need to worry if you use it every few days, and the exfoliant is not environment endangering micro beads – it is sugar granules!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I’m a momma to three. I’ve spent my life in the cosmetology industry, and am a stylist/esthetician/make up artist. I used to be obsessed with all things beauty related. Since the arrival of my third, I’m more obsessed with making things beautiful and don’t often even wear make up anymore.
Tell us a little bit about your company – How did it come to be?
Haven Living was born out of my need to be creative, work with fabulous customers, and bring my skin care philosophy to reality by doing what I love. Creating and curating. Being an Esthetician for nearly 18 yrs, I wanted a way to stay in contact with my customers, and use my years of knowledge to create an authentic natural brand of skin care.
What have you learned since you opened your business?
I have learned there is not nearly enough hours in the day! I have much bigger ideas than I have time, it turns out.
What is your biggest tip for someone interested in starting their own business?
Make sure you have a great team behind you. From family to industry contacts. It truly takes a well oiled machine to make great things happen. As much as you have a vision, you can not achieve it alone.
What does a day in your life look like?

Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by my customers. The people who walk into my shop and love my skin care, products and style. They keep me on my toes, and I love to get their feedback on the direction I should head. The other moms that come to see me because they too are struggling to get through some days. I draw my inspiration from the people around me and the vision of where I want to be. And pinterest…..
