Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’99… wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists.
Who knows what song I just quoted there? Hehe.. Maybe I’m showing my age. If you don’t know the song, I’ve linked it here. It’s a classic. Alright, let’s get back to it —-
As we head into June it is clear that summer is almost officially here, and we are already in the thick of the warm and sunny days. Likely you use sunscreen on your little one every day already, but is the brand you are using a safe choice? Check out this awesome app that you can use to scan your sunscreens and bug sprays to see how safe they are. And then if you find yourself looking for a new brand, check out the options in my list below. But first, let’s talk a bit more about sunscreen, it’s what Baz Luhrmann would want.
The AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) recommends keeping babies under 6 months of age out of the sun completely, and using minimal amounts of sunscreen. BUT, you can bring along a big beach umbrella or a sun tent, and use hats, protective clothing, and tiny amounts of sunscreen if you must.
A quick look on your local grocery or drugstore shelf will show you that an increasing number of sunscreens claim ultra-high SPF protection of 70 or greater. An SPF higher than 30 offers very minimal improvement in sun protection. The FDA recently decided that SPF numbers above 50 are not allowed. They also decided that the terms ‘sweatproof’ and ‘waterproof’ are false claims. The difference in effectiveness between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is approximately 2.5% difference. That’s IT! DO NOT be misled by high SPF numbers.
The majority of sunscreens you can find in your local grocery or drug store are also full of seriously questionable ingredients and known carcinogens. You likely won’t recognize any of the ingredients on the labels. The majority of these sunscreens have been produced with little concern for the wearer’s safety, and really, increasing the wearer’s safety is the entire point of sunscreen! Not only do the ingredients in sunscreen interact with your skin, but data shows after application of any lotions, some of the same chemicals can be detected in your bloodstream. Most people wear sunscreen to reduce the risk of developing cancer, so why are we applying something that could increase this risk? Instead of using nothing at all (which is SO not the answer), I’ve compiled a list of some of the best sunscreens for babies and kids. Please note that these may be more difficult to find in the stores you are used to shopping at, and you may need to buy them online. I have posted direct links at the bottom of this post to make purchasing easier for you!
