Now that we have successfully navigated through the first few days of our cloth diapering adventure, I feel ready and confident to share our experience so far. It was a huge compliment when a friend told me I inspired them to take the leap into cloth diapering, and I figured I could maybe inspire others, as well!
I have been wanting to use cloth since before B was even a twinkle in my eye. Staci, a good friend of mine, had done it and she’s one of my biggest momspirations. From that spark of interest I began to research. I found out about the cloth diapering services that deliver to your house that are available and decided to sign up. As soon as we got home from the hospital we started. It didn’t go so well..
With the services you get fitted diapers, which are basically a diaper made of thick, towel-like fabric that goes on baby and then you put what’s called a diaper cover over top. The diaper cover is waterproof and keeps liquids in. The fitted diaper itself is what absorbs the liquids. The fitted diaper got wet – everywhere! And Miss B did NOT like that feeling!! We quickly cancelled our services and were told to try again at 3 months – maybe we’d have more success then. In the meantime I did more research.
I found out that pocket diapers wick the wetness away from the surface, usually with a fleece lining or some sort of absorbent insert. This sounded like the best option as it was the most similar to disposables, and after a lot of reading and rave reviews from friends I decided I could handle the laundering myself and I didn’t need to pay someone else to do it. Especially if my baby AND the environment would both be happier and better off. So when B was around 3 months old I started to buy some cloth diapers.
My first purchase was a 24 diaper/24 insert package from Sunbaby Diapers. I had learned that 2 dozen should be enough to do laundry every two days. But I started to become obsessed with the cute prints and fluffy bums! I joined a co-op on Facebook and had a couple diaper orders all set to go….when I came across Applecheeks Diapers. (I registered for an Applecheeks swim diaper when I was pregnant, so I had that and really liked the fit, but at the time was convinced we were going to use the diaper service, so I didn’t give any thought to pocket or one size diapers, and promptly forgot all-together.) ..Fast forward, baby is born, diapering ensues..
I don’t remember how I came across Sammie from Easy Peasy Mom‘s Instagram page, but her love of Applecheeks and all of her pictures made me take a closer look at the brand than I had before. I was intrigued by the fact that she was an ambassador for their products. I figured that meant she must really love them, and what a cool experience it must be to do something like that! Intrigued, I looked at a few other ambassador’s pages. Another ambassador named Blyss had a diaper stash picture with almost every Applecheeks colour, positioned in a lovely rainbow. I was instantly hooked. I cancelled all of my co-op orders and joined an Applecheeks Buy/Sell/Trade group, or B/S/T.
I read about the diapers and looked at stash pictures almost every time I was online. I joined the B/S/T to buy some used dipes in the hopes of saving some money. Since Applecheeks make such a high quality product, they cost more than the Sunbaby diapers do. They’re also made in Canada by two cool chicks! Soon after I bought my first Applecheeks diaper.. Then another. Then 2 more here, 4 more there… Soon enough I had 18 diapers in transit to me, including some beautiful “hard to find” colours.
As I type this I have received one dipe (Lemon Zest) in the mail so far, 17 more pending. And I purchased 2 brand new. One Emerald City from SnuggleBugz.ca, and one Lake Echo from Diaper Days, a local store here in Guelph. I will continue to use the Sunbaby diapers until all of my Applecheeks are stripped and ready, but I think once I receive them all I will sell my Sunbaby lot in exchange for more Applecheeks. I love how trim they are.. other cloth diapers are so bulky! And who am I kidding, I can’t wait for my OWN rainbow stash pic!
Happily (and already) an Applecheeks addict,
